Scottish Football League Pyramid
The Scottish football pyramid links the four national SPFL divisions with senior leagues across the Highland and Lowland regions.
Promotion and relegation operate directly between the SPFL divisions. Below League Two, eligible clubs must progress through the pyramid play-off route, with licensing and other requirements affecting whether a champion can take part.

Promotion and relegation
Movement within the SPFL
Automatic promotion and relegation operate between the four SPFL divisions, alongside end-of-season play-offs involving clubs near the top and bottom of neighbouring divisions.
The route into League Two
Entry to the SPFL from level 5 is decided through the pyramid play-off process. Participation is not based on league position alone: clubs must also meet the applicable licensing and competition requirements.
A comparatively young open pyramid
Scotland has a long league history, but a connected promotion route between the national divisions and the leading regional leagues is relatively recent. The SPFL was formed in 2013 by the merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League, and the pyramid play-off route into League Two began the following season. The structure has continued to evolve, including the division of the Lowland League into East and West sections for 2026-27.
